Now, let’s introduce our guests of honor.

Kripto289

Kripto289 primarily got involved with Unity while working as a junior C# developer. Knowing that he wanted to pursue game development further, he decided to create his first game, which led to his first “shot” effect. That marked the beginning of something special.

Fast-forward seven years, and Kripto289 is still hard at work, pushing the envelope with all kinds of new effects. Most recently, he’s been focused on water assets and other natural elements, mulling over innovative VFX ideas and technical features.

Inspired by effects in both film and cinematic game trailers (think Lost Ark and Infamous), Kripto289 strives for beautiful, hyperrealistic details, predicated on a desire for perfection. “The devil is in the details. Animation, lighting, that’s what I find important,” he reveals. “It allows me to analyze my own effects and [catch] mistakes. I always want to rewrite everything. That said, my [upcoming] effects should be even better.”

Archanor VFX

Kenneth F. Moe, also known as Archanor, is a VFX artist and full-time Unity Asset Store publisher. After a long history of game modding and hobbyist-level designs, he finally came across Unity in 2012 while working on one of his first game projects at school. Inspired by games, film, and other animations enjoyed throughout his childhood, Moe credits The Legend of Zelda and Diablo for having informed some of his earliest work.

After graduating from INN University, Hamar, Norway in 2014, he discovered the Asset Store and eventually published his first asset, Magic Arsenal. Since its original release, Magic Arsenal has been updated and improved countless times. In fact, the asset’s initial library of 40 effects, which featured a handful of missiles, has grown to over 400 unique effects, including beams, novas, auras, and other shield impacts.

Despite his long list of published assets, Moe points to Epic Toon FX and Polygon Arsenal as some of his favorites. They are quite different stylistically, but both were created to cover a variety of VFX needs. While Polygon Arsenal is heavily focused on the use of mesh particles, Epic Toon FX uses billboards and hand-drawn sprite sheets. And as with his other particle assets, they’re meant to be accessible to all users.

As Moe puts it, “My philosophy is that VFX packages should be comprehensive, easy and fun to use.”

Hovl Studio

From the earliest days of his childhood, Vlad of Hovl Studio felt a certain fondness for games, which quickly turned into a passion for game development. While studying to be a programmer, he first created a Windows Forms game that taught kids basic math as part of his thesis project. But even then, he wanted to do more.

One day, while browsing online, he came across Unity. At the time, version 5.0 had just been released. As Vlad began exploring the platform and all of its tools, he was astonished by its potential: “It was a huge sandbox for me; my joy knew no bounds. Every day, I sat and learned something new.”

While working on yet another game, Vlad decided to take the plunge and start making the effects for it himself. As he explains, “Making effects in Unity was so easy and exciting that I immersed myself in it completely and am [now] a VFX artist.”

From freelance work to the Asset Store, Vlad continues to create, edit, and polish his work. “I am constantly updating the assets with effects, trying to make them better and easier to use. I study and add new things, optimize old ones, and try to keep the assets up to date with the latest version.”

Expressing gratitude for his customers, Vlad admits that they make his assets even better, thanks to all of their suggestions: “They always force me to come up with something new.”
