We’re excited to announce a collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Project Drawdown to introduce a new environment and sustainability-focused grant for creators using real-time 3D to foster a more sustainable world. Apply for a chance to receive grant funding from a pool of $350K, plus coaching from UNEP and Project Drawdown, and mentorship and technical support from Unity.

Today, Unity celebrates #EarthDay by introducing the first-ever Unity for Humanity Environment and Sustainability Grant, in collaboration with UNEP, global champion for the environment with initiatives focusing on sustainable development, climate, biodiversity, and more, and Project Drawdown, a non-profit organization that seeks to help the world reach “Drawdown” – the future point in time when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline.

The new grant will recognize creators whose real-time 3D experiences encompass themes of sustainability, including but not limited to climate action, clean energy, ocean health, sustainable cities, biodiversity protection, and more. Climate science experts from UNEP and Project Drawdown will serve on the grantee selection committee. Winners will receive funds from a pool of $350,000 USD, along with technical and marketing support and coaching to ensure that selected projects drive the largest impact possible.

We know that the future of humanity depends on our significantly reducing and reversing carbon pollution to avoid the severe impacts of climate change. Our hope is that this grant will amplify the voices of creators around the world who are leveraging real-time 3D to build immersive and motivating experiences of a brighter, more sustainable future that we can all work towards.

At Unity, we believe that creators are changemakers, and that creativity can change the world. This grant was established to accelerate the positive environmental impact that creators are already having as they develop innovative tools, solutions, and stories for a more environmentally friendly future.

We already see this important work being done through experiences like Ahi Kā Rangers, an ecological mobile game created by a Māori (Indigenous peoples of New Zealand) team to generate new cheerleaders and activists for the planet. Also Samudra, an environmentally focused, hand-illustrated, 2D puzzle game that follows a child’s adventure across a polluted sea, and a Drop in the Ocean, an interactive, social VR experience that immerses viewers deep into the plastic pollution crisis plaguing the world’s oceans. These are just a few examples of the amazing ways creators are architecting change and the kind of projects we’re seeking to support with our Unity for Humanity grant.

Harnessing the Unity for Humanity program to connect real-time 3D creators with resources and experts is a key aspect of Unity’s commitment to sustainability. In the fall of 2020, we announced that Unity was joining the Playing for the Planet Alliance, a group of video game companies convened by the UN Environment Programme. By joining the Alliance, members pledge to take action to aid the environment in a number of ways, ranging from green activations in games to reducing emissions and plastics in video game packaging. As part of this alliance, our specific commitment is to elevate and celebrate made with Unity experiences created with an eye toward generating positive environmental impact or are particularly eco-friendly. This grant is just one piece of Unity’s overarching social impact strategy and commitment to supporting the world's transition to a sustainable future.

The Unity for Humanity Environment and Sustainability Grant is now open, and we will be accepting grant submissions through June 3, 2021. This opportunity is a part of Unity Social Impact, a division of Unity aimed at empowering employees and creators of all backgrounds to foster a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable world.
