Gamescom is one of the premier events to be at when it comes to gaming. After two years of limited events (see: COVID-19), it was great to be back in-person for gamescom 2022 and to see so many creators showing off their latest projects.

1. Indies make waves: Indie CommUnity Choice Award

The Indie Arena Booth is one of the most highly anticipated events at gamescom every year. With so many great indie games to choose from, it was tough to pick just four nominees for our first-ever Indie CommUnity Choice Award, which celebrates the Unity community’s most anticipated Made With Unity title.

An internal jury of gamers, technical artists, and veteran devs had a tough time narrowing it down, but after much deliberation they finally came up with a top four. From there, we opened up voting on Twitter and Aka by Cosmo Gatto came away the winner.

Aka is a small, open-world game that's big on heart. On its carefully handcrafted islands, players can take a nap on a giant monster, feed baby dragons, and take care of the fauna and flora... but demons from your past might come back to remind you what you want to forget. We can't wait to play more of Aka, and to see what Cosmo Gatto comes up with next! Watch for an interview with the winner coming soon to the blog.

2. Creator livestreams

We sponsored two creators to be featured as part of the official gamescom 2022 livestreams, hosted on Twitch. During devcom, IXION, made by Bulwark Studios, hosted a deep dive into the game’s use of DOTS ECS and other great systems to make its space-survival city builder that explores the depths of space. It’s always exciting to see the creative ways that developers can solve problems to make their games. Catch the stream, then be sure to congratulate the team for winning Best Strategy / Simulation Game during the event.

Toukana, a local favorite to Germany (where the event takes place), also participated in the Indie Arena Booth with a stream hosted by Layna Live. As part of Toukana’s event, members of the team played through their game Dorfromantik, a fun puzzler to build and connect thriving cities and landscapes. Be sure to watch their playthrough.

3. Metal Hellsinger concert

You may have seen that Metal Hellsinger, which won Most Wanted PC Game at gamescom 2022’s Opening Night Live, also held a live concert during the event with some incredible bands. The lineup included performances from Trivium, Dark Tranquility, and Refused, among others. (A true Eddie Munson moment.)

If you didn’t catch the livestream, be sure to check out the full event on YouTube.

4. Made with Unity releases

There are so many amazing games, it’s sometimes hard to keep track of all the releases… Fear not, we’ve tried to highlight some notable releases we spotted at gamescom 2022 that you might be interested in checking out. Here’s our shortlist:

Check out even more August releases in last week’s roundup on the blog.

5: More platforms, more fun

We had some special partners join us in our booth as well, including Colossal Cave 3D Adventure from Cygnus Entertainment, a team that is recreating the magic of adventure games in 3D. These are the creators that started it all! After giving exclusive hands-on access to press in the booth,  they’ve announced that they’re bringing the Colossal Cave experience to the Nintendo Switch™.

The Unity booth also featured a showcase of creators from Australian studio Ultimate Studio, creator of Hot Lap League, a fast-paced track game where you race against the clock to achieve the fastest times. The game was first brought to mobile, but the team quickly realized that it would be an awesome fit for the Nintendo Switch, which has since launched.

And finally, another great game coming to a new platform is Hardspace: Shipbreaker, the team behind which recently unveiled a new trailer during Opening Night Live. They also announced at the event that that they will be coming to consoles, launching the game on Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5 on September 20.

It was great to be back at gamescom and to see so much incredible talent. We know we haven’t covered it all, but how could we? There was just so much! If you were at gamescom 2022 and have even more amazing callouts, let us know about it on our forums or tweet at us at @unitygames. We’d love to hear from you.

*Nintendo Switch is a trademark of Nintendo.
