Earlier this year, we partnered with LEGO Games to run the LEGO Ideas “Build Your Own Game” contest, which sought to highlight some of the most interesting games created in Unity with the free LEGO Microgame. It was such a rousing success that the Royal Danish Library decided to preserve all 1,150 games submitted as a part of Denmark’s cultural heritage.
This event also grabbed the attention of the LEGO NINJAGO® franchise team. Since the last contest wrapped, we’ve worked closely with the NINJAGO squad to see how we could weave their beloved ninja characters, fun themes, and engaging storylines into a future contest.
Now, we’re excited to announce the launch of our latest LEGO Ideas contest called the LEGO NINJAGO & 1-Button Game Challenge. This time around, we’re looking for entertaining games made with Unity's LEGO Microgame – with the catch that they work using a single button. This could mean carefully timing your jumps, double-tapping, holding to charge, or anything else you think up using the same button. Just prepare to have your game played over and over again!
For reference, take a look at this example of a one-button game. Then, put your thinking cap on and get ready to brainstorm.
This contest is open to creators of all stripes and skill levels, from brand new Unity users to advanced developers. In fact, 40% of participants in our previous contest built their first-ever games in Unity. Don’t hesitate to karate chop your way through the competition by entering any or all of three categories:
Grand Prize winners from each category will get their exclusive chance to have their games playable in LEGO retail stores, plus receive one of four amazing LEGO sets, a $200 Asset Store credit, and one-year Unity Pro subscription. Visit the official LEGO Ideas contest page for more details on prizing, rules, and how to enter.
Looking to give your game an extra edge? Check out the new LEGO NINJAGO Add-On available for free on the Asset Store. This pack comes fully loaded with 12 new LEGO Minifigures (including every NINJAGO main character), a collection of Skybound Plane and Submarine LEGO model vehicles, 30 Ninjabot models, a new one-button controller behavior brick, test scenes, props, NINJAGO music, and so much more.
To get a jumpstart on your project, be sure to tune in on Thursday, October 7 at 11:00 am PT | 2:00 pm ET | 8:00 pm CEST for a contest-themed Game Jam. Experts from both Unity and LEGO Games will share tips and tricks for taking your submission to the next level, and unpack all the goodies from the NINJAGO Add-On. Just visit our Game Jam YouTube page, follow us, and ‘hit the bell’ to set an event reminder. Can’t make it live? No problem – you can watch the archived stream later at the same link.
Better start your ninja training – this contest only runs through November 4, 2021, and we already can’t wait to play your fantastic one-button games. Good luck!
