Unity Simulation is now on AWS, making it multi-cloud compatible

Today at CES, we announced that Unity Simulation, our cloud-based simulation product, is now multi-cloud compatible with its launch on Amazon Web Services (AWS). 

This strategic collaboration with AWS bolsters our commitment to users by giving you the choice to run simulations in the cloud of your choice. You can take advantage of a scalable, reliable, and secure global computing infrastructure to run simulations at scale.

“Unity Simulation on AWS provides a powerful accelerator for customers working to solve problems associated with applying machine learning at scale to tackle real-world problems, such as autonomous vehicle development,” says Sanat Joshi, Head of Worldwide Automotive and Manufacturing Industries Business Development at AWS. “Unity Simulation harnesses the power of AWS’s cloud computing to run millions of simulations to train, and validate AI projects at scale. By leveraging AWS’s highly-scalable compute, storage, and networking capabilities, Unity Simulation provides the fastest and most cost-effective method of solving a wide range of AI simulation challenges.”

How can I use Unity Simulation?

Unity is already used for a wide range of simulation tasks, allowing businesses to create virtual environments easily. Unity Simulation leverages the scalability of the cloud to run millions of simulations simultaneously, accelerating time to insight by testing multiple scenarios in parallel. 

Ultimately, Unity Simulation helps you save time, manages risk, and can showcase how products will perform prior to costly public launches. It is a great technology to leverage in the automotive industry – especially in the world of self-driving cars.

Imagine an autonomous car driving on a highway surrounded by a constant stream of information. From lane markings and street signs to lane-splitting motorcyclists, merging trucks and traffic jams — the ability to make instant, informed decisions is highly crucial. Without perception, there is no way to decipher these inputs. 

Perception is the first stage in the computational pipeline for the safe functioning of a self-driving car. With the power of perception, a car can detect vehicles ahead using cameras and other sensors, identify if they become potential hazards and know to continuously track their movements. This capability extends to the 360-degree field around the vehicle, enabling the car to detect and track all moving and static objects as it travels. 

“In a new era of data-driven artificial intelligence, simulation is the key to unlock the full potential of this game-changing technology,” explains Danny Lange, Unity’s VP of AI and Machine Learning. “By combining Unity’s real-time 3D development platform with the scale and flexibility of the cloud, Unity Simulation will help businesses accelerate the creation of better, safer, and more reliable products.”

We are excited to work with a major automotive manufacturer who has developed a Unity-based 3D simulation to generate training data for their machine-learning perception pipeline. In order to generate photorealistic synthetic data at large scale, they plan to use Unity's cloud-based simulation framework, running on AWS. They are currently focusing on two cities but plan to expand the simulation environment setup to a large scale of more than 50 cities worldwide.

As part of the demo at CES, Unity and AWS are showcasing a scalable perception data generation toolchain. The demo is focused on autonomous vehicles (AV), but the toolchain that involves Unity Simulation and AWS is usable for many other perception data generation scenarios.

In the demo, you’ll see the car follow a path through a realistic traffic simulation with different variations of time-of-day and weather. By simply specifying the sets of parameters to vary in the Unity Editor, Unity Simulation will execute an N-dimensional matrix of all combinations in a scalable fashion, unlocking the potential of high-scale computer vision data generation.
