Discover Unity 2021.2 beta and leverage feature sets to remove additional setup and configuration, so you can start creating faster.
With an increasing number of packages available, and limited guidance on the best combination of packages for your needs, it’s no wonder the Unity Editor can seem rather complex. You might also have to take extra steps to configure the selected packages, so that they sufficiently support your project.
That’s why we’re excited to share this Unity 2021.2 beta feature preview. To make it easier to accomplish your aims in the Unity Editor, we’ve introduced a concept called “feature sets”. Feature sets contain the packages required to achieve specific outcomes – all guaranteed to work well together, and carefully documented so you can get started quickly.
A feature set is a curated group of packages, installed and configured in order to achieve particular outcomes. We want to make feature sets as simple to use as possible, and enhance the learning experience through a combination of samples and documentation to help you jump right in.
You can install feature sets using the Package Manager, which displays a list of all available feature sets, along with their descriptions and the packages included for each set. This workflow is similar to how you would typically install packages.
What you see in 2021.2 beta represents the foundation for us to manage and ship our first feature sets. We’re planning to further improve your experience with feature sets in the Package Manager, which requires some crucial changes to the way we develop, assemble, and ship Unity packages and approach the Unity Editor, more generally. We’re also expecting to continue developing the feature sets’ infrastructure in future releases.
